Junior Dan / Dan Left Hand
Role in the Gorillaz Project
Junior Dan played bass on most of the tracks on the debut album 'Gorillaz', and some of the B-sides. He was also the bass player in the live band for most of the Gorillaz shows in Phase One. Unfortunately he was jailed in Milwaukee on a ancient drugs and firearms charge whilst on the US tour, and he was replaced by Roberto Occhipinti for the remaining shows.
Biography
Junior Dan (or Dan Left Hand, he has gone by both names and been referred to by Damon by both names) is a veteran session bassist from Jamaica. He has appeared on many records by reggae legends such as Augustus Pablo and Burning Spear. He released his own Dub LP, 'KTW Dub' in 1982. He has released some limited edition vinyls on limited 10" format on the Honest Jon's record label since Gorillaz Phase One finished. He got involved with the Gorillaz project almost by accident - he was working in a nearby studio when Damon was putting together the debut album, and he asked to come in and have a look at what Damon was up to. One thing lead to another and he ended up putting bass on most of the tracks
Roberto Occhipinti
Role in the Gorillaz Project
Roberto Occhipinti played bass in the Gorillaz live band for certain of the tour dates in the Phase One tours. Dan Left Hand was certainly the original bassist in the live band. It is also known that Dan Left Hand was jailed in Milwaukee on an drugs and firearms charge in early 2002, presumably on the Gorillaz tour in the US. Roberto Occhipinti probably took over bass duties for the North American tour (it is not known whether he played the final Phase One live show, The Isle Of MTV in Portugal, or whether Dan Left Hand returned).
Biography
Roberto Occhipinti is a professional session bass player. He toured and recorded with Blue Note recording artist Jane Bunnett on her last 3 albums, including the Grammy nominated disc Alma de Santiago. In addition, Roberto toured with Juno award winning group NOJO, performing at Canadian jazz festivals with the legendary saxophonist Sam Rivers. Roberto has recorded 3 albums with Cuban piano virtuoso Hilario Durán, and continues this musical partnership with upcoming performances in the US, Canada and Cuba.Recent recording projects include, a new disc with NOJO and Sam Rivers, a trio album with Hilario Durán (as bassist/producer), a quintet recording with drummer Marty Morell and a new disc for his nonet following on the success of THE CUSP featuring his own compositions for a larger jazz ensemble.Notable performances in 2004 include a live broadcast of the National Jazz Awards where The Cusp was nominated for album of the year, the On Stage Series at the Glenn Gould Theatre in collaboration with the True North Brass and a concert with Jovino Santos Neto and the Gryphon Trio. Roberto Occhipinti also performed with Damon Albarn’s Mali Music at the Barbican in the UK and as well as concerts for the BBC and MTV. As a classical musician, Roberto Occhipinti has been a member of the Winnipeg Symphony, Hamilton Philarmonic and Canadian Opera Company Orchestras. He has performed with virtually every classical music ensemble in Toronto and recent performances include the St. Lawrence Quartet, The Gryphon Trio and Via Salzburg.
