BLACK SAVELOYS REVIEW
FC member Simon Henry went to see The Black Saveloy's last night. Here is what he thought, with the identity of this mystery band being revealed:

How good it was to see Graham back on stage and playing again. Sometimes in the middle of Blur-mania, even I forget just how amazing it is to see this guy play. And after my disappointment in Amsterdam, this was one helluva kick up the backside and a 35 minute set that absolutely rocked the tiny venue to it's core. The speed and vigour of Graham's guitar playing was amazing - and Roddy and Toby were there again (remember the Roxons) to add more loud thrash and bass. What a performance! I can't get over how good it was. After opening with Escape Song, Graham played four new songs and then four old ones, then a final new one. This was the set:
Escape Song ; Spectacular ; No Good Time ; Hopeless Friend ; Freakin Out ; I Wish ; Revolver ; Fags & Failure ; Who The Fuck? ; People of the Earth

Graham reportedly commented that his album is due for release in March of next year.

[bfcnewsdiscussion] Graham at Xfm's Winter Warmer

Well, I was also there with Ian, and I have to say, it was an excellent all
round Graham performance

The thing that struck me the most is the confidence he now has. No more
hiding behind THOSE glasses (in fact he took them off before the first song,
and placed them back on after the last one). Maybe this way he cannot see
the crowd and therefore is less fearful, but who knows.

Each artist last night had about 30 minutes, so he hammered through the
songs without much in between. He started with five new songs (obviously I
don't know the names), all of which were very punky, but had the melodic
ambience of previous blur outings (in fact, Ian and I commented that one of
them could have easily been a blur song in the making).

He then played Reach for my revolver, which the crowd seemed to appreciate,
followed by oldie, 'I wish'.

He then finished with the greatest Graham song I have ever heard, and one
that could easily be a hit. It has been discussed before when they played
as 'the black saveloys', and included the line 'people of the earth your not
so cool, you eat hamburgers and go to school', which is a refrain which is
repeated throughout the song, and is one of the best live songs I have heard
this year (up there with Franz Ferdinand, who are another new band to look
out for)

He came on at 8.15, finished at 8.45, and all was over far too quickly.
Most of the crowd were slightly confused before he came on as to what he
would play (although there were no abusive shouts for blur songs
surprisingly), and I think they were still a bit confused, but entertained,
by the time he left the stage.

So, Graham is growing in confidence and is about to release his most
complete solo album to date. It looks like 2004 is going to be an
interesting year.

Interview publiée aujourd'hui sur le site de XFM :

Indie icon and ex Blur Graham Coxon has been talking exclusively about recording his new solo album, working with onetime Blur producer Stephen Street again, trying to palm his album covers on other people and next year's tour.

Speaking to Xfm Online before his appearance at the Xfm Winter Warmer gig, Coxon explained that his new album marks a definite move away from the stripped down lo-fi style of his previous releases.

“The album sounds really, really nice.” He said, “I’m very pleased with it. It sounds like a lot of the music I’ve liked during my lifetime. Pretty traditional sounds really only slightly more confidently executed, betterly [sic] miked up, and a bit more care taken in recording it."

Whereas the guitarist’s previous albums were self produced, the new record sees Coxon working with Stephen Street who produced Blur’s ‘Parklife’ album.

“It’s my fifth album, but really it’s my first official one. My first recorded as a sole trader, i thought the songs I’d written lent themselves to me taking more time, maybe getting a producer. I decide that the control freakishness that I had on my first few albums was a bit too much, it was time to relax a little bit and let someone help and not be too controlling. I really wanted to work on my vocals too, make sure I had really good takes and I trust Stephen in that way.

“Before I would call the shots and be quite impatient and scruffy in my approach, and I wanted to have Stephen's cleaner approach to things mixed with my scruffy stuff, and it turned out really good."

It also appears that while Coxon has stuck to playing the odd one-off low key live show of late, he is planning on doing a full tour when the new record hits shops.

“Now I am out on my own, I’d regret it if I didn't really give it a good go and do singles and proper tours.” He continued, “When the album comes out I’ll definitely tour Britain and abroad, talk to people about it and do the lot.”

”I haven’t got a name for it yet,” he replied when asked if the new album had a title. “At the moment I’m doing all the drawings for it [Coxon designs all the artwork for his albums] I’ve go about 50 record covers, so if anyone needs one I’m gonna have loads of spares. There was one daft working title called ‘No More Mr Lo-Fi’ but that was a giggle title really, I’m trying to think of something more serious.”
