It's not truuue, it's not truuue, i'm telling you
En fait la vraie interview reprise par le nme , histoire de pouvoir faire un gros titre, un peu moins pompeuse disait ça :
Gavin Allen, South Wales Echo 19 Oct
'I think a lot of my songs are a lot better than Blur,' said Graham Coxon, the band's former guitarist, with unexpected self-belief.
What marks Coxon out, besides his musical ability, is the painfully self-conscious demeanour it seemed might prevent him enjoying a successful solo career when he quit the Britpop giants.
But six solo albums later he's an indie hero in his own right, not that he would ever admit it because compliments embarrass him.
It wasn't always easy to compliment his solo work though, his second album The Golden D for instance seemed at times deliberately impenetrable.
Was that a reaction to being in such a commercially successful band or was it designed to alienate the Blur fans?
'I was still very much in the grip of booze addiction then,' he said, raising the problem that put him into rehab.
'It's a fairly angry lashing out sort of a record. I didn't know if I was capable of writing proper songs when I left Blur and it was only through practise that I have been able to write something like (2004 single) Bittersweet Bundle Of Misery, which shocked me when I wrote it because it was such good stand alone pop song.'
So does he compare his own work to Blur?
'I'd been in a group with Damon Albarn for a long time and that was a lot to live up to,' he said, in a speaking voice sharp and nerdy.
'We worked so hectically in Blur on structure and the overall sound.
'So when I was writing I would ask myself, 'Is this as catchy as a Blur song?' or 'Does it sound too much like a Blur song?'. I mean (Coxon-penned Blur hit) Coffee And TV and Bittersweet Bundle Of Misery have a very similar rhythm and structure but it's ones that have been used many times before from Simon and Garfunkel to Sonic Youth so I didn't worry about that too much.
'So yes I do compare and I think a lot of my songs are a lot better than Blur.'
Coxon is a much-developed songwriter but is also an arch-musician who plays virtually every instrument on his records.
While he acknowledges the control freakery of that, he says there's also a practical reason.
'It comes from having someone doing something with my songs that I don't want them to. I like it all being my fault if something is rubbish and that I don't have anyone else to blame - because I will if I do.
'With Blur there were songs I liked that ended up being songs I didn't like because of sounds that other members put on them.
'(Blur track) Magic America was such a good song but then it ended up with this weird Rhubarb and Custard-style synth thing over it - horrible.'
'We briefly discussed his former bandmates (still in touch with Alex James, not with Dave Rowntree or Damon) and his appreciation of Gorillaz star Albarn as a frontman.
'I'm not a great frontman and when I see proper frontmen I realise how crap I am at it.
'My shows depend on the audience and I like it when someone shouts out something a bit cheeky.
'If the audience are quiet I don't really know what to say to them.
'We're toying with quite a long set for Cardiff so maybe the crowd should bring some sandwiches and some witty lines.'
