Dur !
I'm pleased Blur's drummer has stepped into the political arena. We still get sent each other's media coverage and a heavy package arrived this week. I assumed Damon was No 1 in America again or Graham had been asked to represent Britain in some Biennale or other, or maybe word had got out about the pickled cheese my scientists are working round the clock to perfect for the British Cheese Awards; but it was about Dave "The Dark Destroyer" Rowntree, the people's drummer, running for Westminster. He'll make an excellent politician, trust me. I really think he might be something of a revelation.
It's good that everyone seems to have found their own niche outside of Blur and, ironically, Dave's second coming as a politician is more likely to reunite us than anything. We'd all grown to resent the fact that we needed each other and now that we no longer seem to, we can face each other again and show those MySpace nippers how it's done
NMEBlur's Dave Rowntree has lost his election bid to become a local councillor.
The drummer stood for a seat on Westminster council as a Labour candidate in a by-elections in the Marylebone ward, but lost out to Conservative candidate Ian Rowley in yesterday's (May 3) vote.
Also running in the elections were Stuart Bonar for the Liberal Democrats and Colin Merton for the UK Independence Party.
As previously reported Rowntree announced his intention to stand for the by-elections as a "long-standing member of the Labour party and active in local politics for a while".
The drummer said that he would be fighting for local issues, including old people's homes and pedestrian crossings.
Early in the week he posted his take on the campaign on a YouTube video saying: "It's been really good fun though, and I have really enjoyed it and I have learned a lot."

Dave Rowntree admits the drug nearly destroyed him

Blur drummer Dave Rowntree has admitted to being addicted to cocaine during his band's Britpop days.
Rowntree has said that he began using the drugs during the height of the band's fame.
He said: "I didn't start using regularly until the 90s, but as my tolerance increased, I used more. I managed to get help before they destroyed my life, and these days I'm active in the recovery community.
"The key point is that all the way along, I thought my behaviour was normal and it was the rest of the world that had gone mad. I had no idea my experience was different to anyone else's because I had nothing to measure it against."
Meanwhile, with rumours that Rowntree is keen to stand as a Labour candidate at the next general election, he told The Guardian that he hoped that the new year would bring a change in government's steps to tackle the drug problem.
He said: "Some evidence suggests that the proportion of people who may be at serious risk of becoming dependent could be as high as one in six. If so, taking drugs is really like playing Russian roulette.
"Most people will get away with it, but for some it will mean their death. And just like Russian roulette, you won't know which group you're in until it's too late."
