Les Vines ont annulé la fin de leur tournée pour cause de fatigue :
The Vines have been ordered to fly home to Australia for an emergency break to rest and recuperate after an "exhausted" Craig Nicholls cracked onstage at a show in Boston and fell brawling into the audience with bassist Patrick Matthews
As a result, dates scheduled for early 2003 - including thier hotly-aticipated NME awards show at the London WC2 Astoria on February 12th, plus tours of Japan and America - have been pulled so that Nicholls can "sort his head out"
Nicholls, who has grown increasingly erratic and explosive onstage as the years relentless touring schedule progressed, has been flown home suffering from exhaustion.
Matthews, meanwhile, has been showing the starin too. "I get e-mails from Patrick and they've been getting shorter and shorter, until it's literally "i'm fucking knackered"" a source told NME. In a recent interview, Matthews said "I wish it could stop, that I could walk away,"and that he wished he could go back to "being Craigs sideman and still going off on my own"
The band flew home after playing a show in Chicargo on December 15th. They were scheduled to play additional gigs in Indianapolis and Detroit on December 16th and 17th.
Full Story:
The bust-up in Boston started after Matthews broke a bass string while playing Aint no Room. According to eye-witnesses, Nicholls "went nutty", throwing his mic around and hitting Matthews on the head. He lunged at Nicholls and the pair fell into the audience. Their set was cut short and they went backstage, where Nicholls smashed up a pile of christmas hampers stored in the dressing room. Speaking to Bostin Phoenix, Mark Hamiton, manager of the middle east, the venue where the gig was held, said: "did they make a mess with total disregard to everyone else? Yes"
Two days earlier, the band had been booted off The tonight show with Jay Leno in Los angeles, after Nicholls wrecked the set during rehersals that afternoon. He destoried a plexi-glass partition surrounding the drum-kit while running through Outtathaway for that nights performance. The incident was kept quiet, with both the Jay Leno show and the band's US label slogging their was through "places you've never heard of" with the music.
Now, after their enforced absence over christmas, the band are expected to fulfil their obligation to play the Big Day Out tour in Australia. But their UK label has said that forcing them to travel to Japan, the UK and the US again would be too much. A source close to the band told NME that if they were forced to go ahead with so many dates, "it could break them up"
"They're absolutely fucking knackered", said the spokesperson. "it's taken it's toll on Craig. He hates flying and he's had to fly a hell of a lot He's desparate to record a new album but people keep putting more and more gigs on their schedule.
"They've had a very long year and they've done a hell of a lot. I'm amazed they've got this far. Craigs always said, since the first interview he did with NME that he didn't want to do gigs. He's a fucking amazing performer, I've never worked with someone who's as compelling onstage. But for somebody who fragile it didn't come as that much of a surprise when he gave in, in America."
"We're gutted they're not doing the NME gig, it was supposed to round off an incredile year for them. But they need a rest. It's been constant work. The other thing is thast they've got a lot of criticism, especially like the guy from the Coral saying that their phoneys and fakes. All these things like Jay Leno are totally and utterly genuine - they smashed up the TV studio in rehersal rather than doing it on camera for maximum effect. He really didn't want to do that show. did he?
"Then the fight onstage - none of these things are planned. They just react the only way they know, which is kicking out against it."
With the band clearly reaching meltdown, they held crisis talks with their management and labels and decided it was necessary to take time out.
"That (the boston incident) and the Leno thing was enough for management and the band to say we need some time off," said the spokesperson.
Matthews and Nicholls have 2001, when they started working on their debut album, highly evolved. Drummer Hammish Rosser and Guitarist ryan griffiths joined them for the tour in February. "it's been such a long year, something had to give," said the spokesperson. He added that it was exacerbated by Nicholls' obsession with forgetting the new songs in his head.
"The more they tour, the more he thinks that he's forgetting his songs. It's a real fear of his; the most important thing to him is to be able to know that other people can hear them. At the moment, the more they're touring, the more knackered they're getting, and he's going to forget them"
Ticket-holding fans who wish to be refunded for the NME awards gig on February 12th do so at the point of purchase. However the show will go on, with the line-up for that nights Astoria show being expanded. The Libertines take over as headliners, with detroits The sights being joined by newcomers The Hiss and one other act, still to be announced.
Ne pas s'inquieter, ils vont rentrer en Australie faire une sieste avec les kangourous et nous pondre leur deuxième bébé... hope
